20 Years in the Heat Pump Industry: What I've Learned About Choosing the Right Water Heater

When people ask me how I got into the heat pump business, I always smile. It wasn't a grand plan. Twenty years ago, I was just a young engineer in Coimbatore who believed there had to be a smarter, more efficient way to heat water. Today, after two decades of installations, repairs, and thousands of conversations with homeowners and businesses, I can say — that belief was absolutely right.

Why Heat Pump Water Heaters Actually Make Sense

I've seen a lot of homeowners spend thousands on traditional electric geysers or gas water heaters, only to watch their electricity bills climb year after year. The thing is, conventional water heaters work by directly generating heat — they essentially convert all that energy just to warm up water. A heat pump water heater, on the other hand, doesn't generate heat. It moves heat. That's the key difference.

Think of it like a refrigerator working in reverse. Instead of pulling heat out of a space to keep it cool, a heat pump pulls heat from the ambient air and transfers it into your water tank. For every 1 unit of electricity consumed, a good heat pump can deliver 3 to 4 units of heat energy. That's an efficiency of 300–400%. No conventional heater can come close to that.

What 20 Years in This Industry Has Taught Me

In my early days, I used to spend a lot of time convincing customers. The technology was relatively new in India, and people were skeptical. "Does it really work in our climate?" was the question I heard most often. The answer, especially here in Coimbatore and across South India, is a resounding yes. Our warm, humid climate is actually ideal for heat pump technology. The system works best when ambient temperatures are above 15°C — and in Coimbatore, we're well above that almost all year round.

Over the years, I've also learned that the quality of installation matters just as much as the quality of the equipment. I've seen perfectly good heat pumps underperform simply because they were installed in poorly ventilated spaces, or with the wrong pipe sizing. This is why I always tell people: don't just buy a heat pump, make sure the team installing it knows what they're doing.

Who Should Consider a Heat Pump Water Heater?

Honestly? Almost everyone with a significant hot water need. Over the years, my team has installed heat pump water heaters in homes, hotels, hospitals, hostels, factories, and dairy units. Anywhere that needs consistent hot water in large volumes, a heat pump pays for itself — often within 2 to 3 years. After that, the savings are pure profit.

For a typical family of four using hot water daily, switching from a conventional electric geyser to a heat pump water heater can cut water-heating electricity costs by 60 to 70%. That's money that stays in your pocket every single month.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

After twenty years, I've seen the same mistakes come up again and again. The first is undersizing — people try to save money upfront by buying a smaller unit, then wonder why it can't keep up with demand. The second is ignoring maintenance. Heat pump water heaters are low-maintenance, but they're not no-maintenance. A simple annual check-up keeps them running efficiently for 10 to 15 years. The third mistake is placing the unit in a closed room with no airflow. The system needs to breathe — it pulls heat from the air, after all.

My Advice After Two Decades

If you're still on the fence about switching to a heat pump water heater, I understand. It's a bigger upfront investment than a standard geyser. But when I look back at the thousands of installations we've done, not a single customer has come back to me and said, "I regret this." Not one. They come back for referrals, for maintenance, or to upgrade to a bigger unit — but never with regrets.

The world is moving toward energy efficiency, and so should your home or business. A heat pump water heater is one of the easiest, most impactful steps you can take — for your wallet and for the planet. If you have questions, I'm always happy to talk. After all, this has been my life's work for twenty years, and I still love every conversation about it.
